To the many industry leaders, friends, and colleagues who have joined me on this journey—thank you for the adventure. You know who you are! As I once said, “Life is a hurdle and a stepping stone. I just hope the next stone is a boulder with a high vantage point to spot that elusive trout!” (K.R. Lowrie, 2012)

Meet the Owner

Keith “Kip” Lowrie is a certified inland captain with whitewater training from Colorado. In 2007, Kip earned a Bachelor of General Studies degree from Oakland University, along with a minor in Biology and a concentration in Film Aesthetics and History.

Now in his 25th year as the owner and operator of Woodland Rivers, Kip serves as the head guide for local walk-and-wade trips, leads casting clinics, and occasionally organizes destination fishing trips. His expertise and dedication make him a trusted leader in the fly fishing community.

Keith “Kip” Lowrie began fishing at the age of two and has been a proud resident of Oakland County for over 25 years. At 13, Kip caught his first salmon, an 18-pounder, off the state dock in Port Austin, MI. However, some of his fondest memories are fishing for bluegill, bass, and catfish in his grandparents’ ponds in Ortonville, MI. “My grandparents had several interconnected ponds, each home to lunker bass,” he recalls.

Kip’s passion for fishing deepened when he received his first fly-tying kit at the age of 12. By 13, he was tying flies and honing his skills in fly fishing. One of Kip’s most memorable catches was a 400-pound hammerhead shark off the coast of Miami, FL, at age 15. “I vividly remember standing at the back of the boat for nearly two hours, completely absorbed in the fight. Time flew by—it was an unforgettable experience.”

Today, Kip spends as much time as possible fishing Michigan’s waters, targeting trout, salmon, steelhead, and bass. His background includes a fisheries education from Lake Superior State University and a minor in Biology from Oakland University. Kip also has extensive industry experience, having worked at five fly shops, including the former Paint Creek Outfitters in downtown Rochester during his teenage years.

With a deep passion for fly fishing, Kip founded Woodland Rivers to share his love for the sport and provide customers with exceptional guided fly fishing experiences.
