May 2022

The opening Trout weekend brought a lot of anglers to the creeks, streams and rivers across Michigan. The local bite was a bit slow for the morning hours and not many hatches to report. Saw an occasional blue winged olive make its angelic flight off of the water but the fish were not keying in on anything in particular. The water temp was an ideal 55 degrees taken on Saturday the 30th of April. The streamer bite was good late afternoon and I witnessed an estimated 18 inch brown caught north of town on a white bead headed wooly bugger. The creek system was in good shape with moderate flow and a decent stain. Remember to keep the waters clean this season when you are out fishing and observing. Take out what you take in and be stream conscious out there! The creek received its annual stocking of brown trout and these fish tend to be a bit sensitive and a quick Catch & Release is most ideal should you hook into a few. The Clinton river had a decent spring run of steelhead and drop backs are still being caught this early May. The fishing up north for steelhead this season was hit or miss with a few good weeks of very productive fishing.

Enjoy the fishing season everyone and stay safe out there on the waters you pursue!
