May/June 2025

The local trout opener was mostly a bust as water levels were high, fast and dirty. In fact the first two weeks of May was mostly unfishable do to the heavy rains. Later May and the first week of June the system fished pretty well. A good amount of smaller juvenile steelhead and browns were caught. It’s very good to see more browns again throughout the local waters. It is now to hot to fish trout safely and even with Catch & Release practices the fish are still very stressed from the fight and often don’t make it. Remember if the water temp is 68 degrees or warmer, hang it up for the day and fish for bluegills and bass. Late August and usually all of September provides cooler temps again and the trout are actively feeding once again and not stressed. Very much enjoyed the several Trips that went out this season and we caught some nice fish! For those that fish up north, the Giant Mayfly known as the hex are now hatching and evenings into the late night can bring up some rather large trout as they throw their caution to the wind to feed on a substantial meal. The upper Clinton near Auburn Hills received their annual trout stocking and some very nice rainbows and browns have been caught on dries, nymphs, wets and streamers. Enjoy your summer fly anglers and stay safe and cool out there!
